July 9, 2024, Sudbury, Ont. — The Beaver Lake fire station in Greater Sudbury has been consolidated into the Whitefish station.

The change in reporting location for firefighters, which came into effect on July 4, stems from one of nine resolutions related to the fire service passed by the Greater Sudbury city council on June 27 and July 11, 2023.

The resolution gave the Beaver Lake station one year to recruit enough volunteer firefighters to match the average number of volunteers in other stations.

The department was unsuccessful, and after a resolution to leave the station open and continue recruitment efforts was defeated on June 25, council directed staff to proceed with the consolidation.

Former Beaver Lake firefighters have the option to respond to calls from home using their personal vehicle. The consolidated department will continue to serve the Beaver Lake area.
