Oakville, Ont.

Fire Service Women Ontario (FSWO) Board of Directors invites you to our 2019 Professional Development Symposium and Annual General Meeting (AGM), titled, “Empowered. Together. FSWO.” October 18 to 20, 2019, hosted by Ottawa Fire Services and La Cité Collégiale.

This year’s symposium features topics of physical and mental training vital to modern day firefighting. We have some valuable courses lined up, led by amazing instructors and experts in their fields of study, including:

  • Paul St-Onge, Coordinator/Professor of cutting edge La Cité Collégiale will be instructing The Emergency Vehicle Operator workshop involving the use of a driving simulator along with physically demanding Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) Workshop
  • Jason Defosse of Code 4 Fire & Rescue will be sharing top techniques and extrication tactics along with a full day Auto Extrication – Stabilization, Lifting and Extrication course.
  • Join members from the Ottawa Fire Service for an introductory day ‘From Knowledge To Practice’ (FKTP). Cheryl and Carissa will explore fire behaviour through small prop demonstrations, practice door control and nozzle techniques, finally putting everything together in a live burn exercise in a 40’ Enclosure Fire Dynamics Simulator.
  • Kelly, Genna and Sarah, first class firefighters with the Ottawa Fire Service will be looking at fitness, and how to apply it functionally to firefighting. If you love fitness, this is the workshop for you!

In addition, the symposium offers classroom sessions that focus on effective search and rescue techniques, learning to be an assertive, effective and safe all-hazards commander, leadership, firefighter health, particularly exposures to toxic chemicals in the fire service, and learning how first responder peer support teams have worked to break down silos and stigmas, and how they are actively engaged in supporting their colleagues and each other.
