By The Canadian Press
Headlines NewsMay 13, 2016, Longueuil, Que. - Five people, including three children, were taken to hospital following a massive apartment building fire early Friday in Longueuil, Que.
Officials say they required treatment for smoke inhalation and shock after the blaze destroyed most of the three-storey building.
Firefighters in the community just south of Montreal were called to the blaze at around 2 a.m.
They arrived to find that a back wall had collapsed and severed a gas line, which fuelled the flames even further, trapping about 20 residents inside. Firefighters used ladders to rescue them from their balconies.
A Canadian Red Cross team was at the scene to tend to about 40 displaced residents.
There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.
