Dec. 16, 2019, Montreal – A duplex in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough in Montreal was engulfed in flames, forcing about 20 people out early Saturday. A man in his 70s was taken to a hospital in cardio-respiratory arrest, according to Marie-Ève Beausoleil, head of section at the Montreal Fire Department, but it is not known whether he is a tenant or the owner of the premises. He later died in the hospital.
The flames are believed to have started around 5 a.m. Saturday in the interior of the duplex on Henri-Julien Ave. near Roy St.
Tenants of both units were forced out as well as those in the two adjacent residences.
About 100 firefighters were dispatched to the four-alarm fire, which appeared to have been brought under control by about 8 a.m., though with considerable apparent smoke and water damage.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and the arson unit of the Montreal police was brought in.
