Rural Alberta departments face difficulties recruiting and retaining volunteers, says chief

May 8, 2017, Rockyview County, Alta. - Volunteers make up more than 80 per cent of Alberta's firefighters but the economic downturn has hit recruitment and retention hard, says a local fire chief, especially in smaller communities. Rockyview County has been losing about 16 per cent of its volunteers each year, according to fire Chief Randy Smith.
