Nov. 26, 2024, Lorette, Man. — The Taché Fire Department in Manitoba has incorporated a new sensory kit to assist at some of the most sensitive emergency scenes.

The kit is designed to support neurodivergent individuals at emergency scenes who have been diagnosed with a developmental or learning disorder including ADHD, dyslexia, or Tourette’s syndrome, sensory disorders or intellectual disabilities, the department reported in a media release.

The kit contains items that help regulate sensory input, including noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses to mitigate light sensitivity, fidget spinners and poppers for tactile relief.

Additionally, the kit includes picture exchange communication cards and notebooks to facilitate communication.

All items incorporated were donated to the department.

The tools will assist in calming individuals experiencing sensory overload and allow firefighters to communicate with nonverbal individuals.
