Yukon firefighters gaining experience fighting wildfires in British Columbia and Northwest Territories

May 24, 2024, Yukon — Yukon sent wildfire personnel to assist in Fort Liard, N.W.T., and Fort Nelson, B.C., the territory announced in a press release.

The teams will provide essential assistance to these northern regions and will be able to gain experience at the start of the season.

On May 16, nine firefighters from the Southern Lakes Base in Whitehorse were sent to British Columbia.

This group, which consists of three initial attack teams and three wildfire vehicles, will participate in the response to the Parker Lake Fire in Fort Nelson.


A second group, a 20-person Sustained Action Team from the Yukon First Nations Fire Service, left May 21 to fight a fire south of Fort Liard.

The group was accompanied by an agency representative from the Wildland Fire Management Section.

Both resource requests were made through the Northwest Compact resource sharing agreement.
