Sept. 15, 2016, Longueuil, Que. - An abandoned church in Longueuil was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning.

The building once housed the Catholic Our Lady of Fatima Church at Marie-Victorin Blvd. and Leo St. and faced the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

No one was injured in the blaze that was sparked just before 1 a.m. The Longueuil Fire Department responded to several calls reporting the fire, and by the time they arrived the fire was well underway. They used a defensive strategy to protect nearby buildings, including the parish rectory. They then used shovels to knock down debris so they could drench the flames more effectively.

They were still soaking the debris at 5 a.m.

The area was evacuated of about 20 residents during the night, though some were allowed to go home by dawn. Firefighters have not yet determined what caused the fire.
