Mar. 12, 2024, Iqaluit, Nunavut – Iqaluit firefighters responded to a fire late Monday morning in a building which houses the Nunavut Wellness Spa.

Smoke could be seen pouring out of the upper floor of the building 1419, which is located on Sikituuq Court off Sivumugiaq Street, the city’s main road.

Firefighters climbed the ladder truck and entered the building through a second-floor entrance.

A municipal enforcement vehicle blocked access to the street, where two fire engines were parked. A city water truck was parked across the street on standby.

Just before noon, the city issued a public service announcement asking people to avoid the area and warning of possible traffic disruptions.

“Please avoid 1419 for the duration of the fire, to give our firefighters the room they need to complete their job safely,” the statement said. “In addition to giving them space on the road, be aware there could be disruptions to trucked water services, as they will be prioritizing emergency response.”

It’s not clear if anyone was injured in the fire. Two ambulances were parked nearby during the fire department’s response.

The spa is located in the lower floor of the building, according to the Nunavut Wellness Spa website.
