Kitchener facing shortfall for illness claims

Nov. 15, 2016, Kitchener, Ont. - Ontario cities face millions of dollars in worker compensation claims for which they don't have the funds, under changes that allow firefighters to get automatic benefits for post-traumatic stress and certain cancers. The City of Kitchener has a reserve for claims for workplace injuries and illnesses, but the changes mean the city has funds to cover less than 10 per cent of current claims, according to a report prepared for council's deliberations for the 2017 budget.
