Feb. 10, 2025, St. John’s, N.L. — The federal government and the government of Newfoundland and Labrador have signed a new agreement to support people living without homes, as part of the Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampments Initiative (UHEI).

The agreement will make more than $2 million in federal funding available to St. John’s over the next two years, with the provincial government investing over $30 million in housing-focused responses to homelessness across the province from 2024 to 2026.

Initiatives tailored to St. John’s include the construction 13 provincially owned micro homes, continued operation of the expanded staffed emergency shelter system and the transitional housing initiative Horizons at 106 and funding to support the operations of End Homelessness St. John’s, the federal government reported in a press release.

The funding provided by the federal government is mark of the $250 million investment outlined in Budget 2024 to address encampments and unsheltered homelessness across Canada.
