Town of Essex announces appointment of fire chief

Dec. 15, 2023, Essex, Ont. – The Town of Essex and Essex Fire and Rescue Services have announced the appointment of Jason Pillon to the position of fire chief, effective Monday, Dec. 18.

Jason Pillon, a third-generation firefighter, has played an integral role for Essex Fire and Rescue Services since 1997 when he joined as a volunteer firefighter at Station 3. Throughout his career, Pillon has held the position of firefighter, captain, battalion chief, assistant deputy fire chief – prevention and education, deputy fire chief, and most recently acting fire chief.

In addition to his outstanding service within the town, Pillon has contributed over two decades to REFAC Industrial, where he served as a Certified Journeyman Ironworker and shop foreman. A graduate of St. Clair College with a diploma in Machine Shop, Pillon has continually pursued professional development, obtaining numerous National Fire Protection Certifications, including but not limited to:

  • NFPA 1033 (Fire Investigator)
  • NFPA 1006 (Technical Rescue for Ice Water Rescue)
  • NFPA 1021 (Fire Officer levels 1, 2, and 3)
  • NFPA 1035 (Fire and Life Safety Educator levels 1 and 2, and Public Information Officer)
  • NFPA 472 (Hazmat Operations and Awareness)
  • NFPA 1031 (Fire Inspector level 1)
  • NFPA 1041 (Fire Service Instructor levels 1 and 2)
  • NFPA 1001 (Firefighter levels 1 and 2)
  • TAPC (the Arson Prevention Program for Children)
  • CEMC (Community Emergency Management Coordinator)

Pillon’s experience in fire administration, fire ground command, firefighter safety, fire operations, fire prevention and public education will be a great asset as he transitions to his new role.
